Literacy in The Gambia is slowly improving and both Boys and Girls now are able to attend government schools from the age of seven, so long as the family can pay for uniform, shoes, exercise books, text books etc, or the child is sponsored. The inability of families to pay for the basics means many adults have never attended school or only attended for a few years.
Winged Dreams is providing a small scale pilot Adult Education Project in Lamin Village utilising our Rice Distribution Office & Store. The project provides a small group of illiterate woman with adult literacy classes 4 afternoons a week taught by a local experienced Gambian Teacher. We also provide text and exercise books, pens and pencils.
Those attending this project are already improving their reading & writing skills, this is increasing their confidence and possible work opportunities.
We would love to expand this project to a larger group of adults, sadly we are unable to raise sufficient extra donations to enable us to do this.
